MOTOR fluids, capacities and specs

Pull factory fluid types, fill capacities, and key specs from MOTOR for the exact decoded vehicle so your techs fill it right the first time.

MOTOR fluids, capacities and specs

Guessing on fluids is how comebacks happen. Put the wrong spec ATF in a transmission or under-fill a cooling system and you've bought yourself a problem. Pista pulls factory fluid types and fill capacities straight from MOTOR for the exact vehicle you decoded, so the tech fills it right the first time and the writer can quote the right quantity.

What MOTOR fluid data covers

For the decoded vehicle, MOTOR can return:

  • Engine oil type, viscosity, and capacity (with and without filter change where it differs).
  • Coolant type and total system capacity.
  • Transmission and transfer case fluid spec and fill volume.
  • Brake, power steering, and differential fluids and capacities.
  • Related specs like torque values that go with the service.

Look up fluids and capacities on a job

  1. Confirm the RO vehicle is decoded by VIN so the data matches the exact engine and drivetrain. See Decoding a VIN.
  2. Open the job or labor line for the service (an oil change, a coolant flush, a trans service).
  3. Tap Specs or Fluids on the line — the Driven by MOTOR info action.
  4. Pista shows the fluid type and the capacity for that operation on that vehicle.

Because the lookup is keyed to the decoded VIN, the capacity you see is for the engine on the lift, not a class average.

Use it to quote, not just to fill

Fluid data isn't only for the bay — it makes your write-ups tighter:

  1. Order the right quantity. If MOTOR says the cooling system holds the amount it holds, you bill that, not a round guess.
  2. Match the spec to the part. Pull the exact viscosity or fluid standard into your parts search so you stock the correct product.
  3. Explain the price. "Your transmission takes a full-synthetic spec fluid and this much of it" is an easy, factual justification at the counter.

Tip: Keep the capacity open in the Pista mobile app while you fill. The phone shows the same MOTOR figures, so the tech isn't walking back to the front counter mid-service.

Good to know

  • Capacities are factory fill references. Always verify the level with the dipstick, sight glass, or fill-to-spill method for that vehicle. Use the number to order and quote; use the vehicle to confirm the final level.
  • Coverage depends on the vehicle and operation. Very new model years or unusual configurations may have limited data. When that happens, fall back to the OEM service portal for the brand.
  • Want the procedure and torque values that go with the fluid service? See Viewing MOTOR repair procedures and specs.
