License plate decoding

Sometimes you don't have the VIN. The car is wedged in the back of the lot, the windshield is filthy, or the customer is in a hurry at drop-off. A license plate plus state is often enough for Pista to find the vehicle and decode it, so check-in keeps moving and you fill in the rest later.

Decode a plate in Pista

1. On a repair order, open the Vehicle section and choose Plate lookup.
2. Enter the plate number and select the state it's registered in. State matters — the same characters can belong to different cars in different states.
3. Tap Look up. Pista returns the VIN and decoded vehicle when the plate resolves.
4. Confirm the year, make, model, and engine, then tap Use this vehicle.

When the plate resolves to a VIN, you get the same full decode you'd get from scanning the VIN directly: matched MOTOR labor, parts fitment, and any open recalls.

When a plate won't resolve

Plate data isn't as universal as the VIN, so a lookup can come back empty. Common reasons:

• The plate is brand new or was recently transferred and hasn't propagated.
• It's a temporary, dealer, or specialty plate.
• The state was wrong, or a character was misread (zero vs. O, eight vs. B).

If the lookup fails, fall back to the VIN. Scan the door-jamb sticker or type the VIN by hand. See Decoding a VIN.

Tips

• Use plate lookup for speed, VIN for certainty. Plate is the fast curb move; a confirmed VIN is the source of truth. If you'll be ordering parts or quoting big labor, verify the VIN before the car leaves.
• Double-check the state at the curb. Out-of-state customers are easy to miss. The registration sticker on the plate or the insurance card confirms it.
• Returning customer? If this plate or VIN has been in before, Pista will surface the existing vehicle and its history instead of creating a duplicate.

Good to know

A plate lookup that resolves still attaches the underlying VIN to the vehicle record, so labor times and parts stay accurate. Always glance at the decoded engine before you commit it to the ticket — that one line drives every labor estimate after it.
