Pairing the OBD dongle

Connect a Bluetooth OBD-II dongle to the Pista app so you can pull live vehicle data and diagnostic codes from the bay.

Pairing the OBD dongle

Plug a Bluetooth OBD-II dongle into a car and the Pista app turns your phone into a quick scan tool: live sensor data, stored trouble codes, and a fast read on what the vehicle is actually telling you. The first step is pairing the dongle to the app. Do it once per phone and the app reconnects automatically after that.

A paired OBD-II dongle decodes the vehicle by VIN and streams its data straight into the app.

What you need

  • A Bluetooth OBD-II dongle (a low-energy BLE dongle is recommended for the fastest, most stable link).
  • The vehicle's OBD-II port, almost always under the dash, driver's side, near the steering column.
  • The Pista app, signed in. See Getting the Pista app.

Pair the dongle

  1. Plug the dongle into the vehicle's OBD-II port until it seats firmly.
  2. Turn the ignition to ON (engine running is fine and gives you live data). The dongle's light should come on.
  3. On the phone, open Pista and go to the vehicle or repair order for that car.
  4. Tap the OBD / Live Data option, then tap Connect dongle.
  5. The app scans for nearby dongles. Tap yours in the list to pair.
  6. Wait for the status to read Connected. You are now linked to the vehicle.

Good to know: Make sure Bluetooth is on and that the phone's location/Bluetooth permission is granted to Pista. Many phones require location permission to scan for Bluetooth devices, so if no dongle shows up, that permission is the first thing to check.

Confirm the connection

Once paired, you should see the vehicle respond:

  1. A Connected badge appears on the OBD screen.
  2. Basic readings (like RPM and coolant temp) start updating live.
  3. The decoded vehicle, matched by VIN, shows at the top so you know you are reading the right car.

From here you can open Vehicle health and live data to read codes and stream sensors.

Once connected, the phone becomes a pocket scan tool you carry from bay to bay.

Reconnecting next time

You only pair a dongle once per phone. After that:

  • Plug the dongle into any car and open the OBD screen; Pista reconnects to the remembered dongle on its own.
  • If it does not auto-connect, tap Connect dongle and pick it from the list again.

When it will not pair

Work through these in order:

  1. No dongle in the list? Confirm Bluetooth and location permission are on, then unplug and replug the dongle to power-cycle it.
  2. Pairs then drops? The dongle may be loose in the port or low on power. Reseat it and keep the ignition on.
  3. Paired to another phone? A dongle holds one active Bluetooth link. Disconnect it in the other phone's settings first.
  4. Still stuck? Try the dongle on a second vehicle to rule out a bad port.

Good to know

  • Keep the dongle unplugged when the shop closes; some leave a small parasitic draw on the battery overnight.
  • One dongle per bay works well, paired to whichever phone is running diagnostics that day.
  • Live data and codes attach to the vehicle record, so anything you capture is there for the next visit. See Vehicle service history.
